ALL NIGHT WINS AT TIMARU
ACCIDENT IN FLYING HANDICAP (P.A.) TIMARU, October 18. , The South Canterbury Jockey Club s ■ spring meeting was held yesterday in fine weather. There was a large attendance and the totalizator handled £25,675 against £17,548/10/- last year. An inquiry was held ’ into an accident in the Washdyke Trot. The evidence showed that Star Lynn stumbled and fell, bringing down Motto. Star Lynn received no interference. Tatterson, the ' driver of Motto, broke a thumb and received slight head injuries. There was a bad accident in the Flying ’ Handicap, Leighnor, Sally Lunn, Stabilize and Egyptian Rose all losing their riders. Leighnor broke a leg and was destroyed. , The finding of an inquiry was that the accident was caused by the falling of ’ Leighnor, but it was not attributable to ■ careless riding. Lady Don staged an attractive run to win the Otaio Hurdles easily after Adina had seemed likely to hold his place in front, having been there from the early stage. Lady Don was not nearly so much fancied as at Wingatui, when she was a disappointment. Taxpayer went well for six furlongs and then made a bad jump. Norse was stopping in the straight. Rockery and Recollection, who are both engaged at Trentham, ran badly and Donadea tailed the field all the way. Damascus, always well placed, won the Spring Stakes impressively. Silver Sox joined the leaders early and finished well for second, with prospects of soon doing better. So will Stornbridge, who was having his first race and was a close fourth. He was narrowly beaten by Grayfort, who may be a good horse, especially when tried over more ground. Keewah led all the way in the Washdyke Trot. She is an aged Wrack mare who has only started to show form. The favourite, Radical, broke at the start. W. K. Tatterson suffered slight head injuries and broke a thumb when Motto fell about three furlongs from home, but he was back on the course later in the afternoon. ALL NIGHT’S SUCCESS
AU Night made an attractive entry into staying company when he led all the way in the Teschemaker Handicap and stalled off all challenges in the run home in decisive fashion. He will win more distance races. The Joker and The Raker filled the places, both staying well, with The Joker the better of the pair over the final furlong. Eulogist was fourth, but was going without much dash in the straight. Atreus attended All Night for a mile and then gradually faded out. His form was disappointing after his second at Wingatui. Good Scout finished well, but came from too far back to have a chance. Wardress, Boloyna and Southern Sail were never prominent. Boloyna and Strip will not go to Trentham. ' Fur Coat led practically all the way in the Taiko Hack Handicap. He just hung on to beat Coy, who looked to be unlucky as she had a lot of leeway to make up after losing her position early. She may make amends at Gore. Lady Nuffield began badly and was a long way back when she stumbled at the home turn. The wellbacked Last Effort could not find an opening in the run home. SCOTTISH DALE’S EASY WIN Scottish Dale waited on the leaders to the straight and then dashed out to win the Flying Handicap easily. She looks on the way to good class and she will go to Trentham. King Herod, always near the front, hung on for second place, beating Grilse, who ran well in her first race since she won the Welcome Stakes last spring. She will do much better soon. The race was marred by an accident. Leighnor fell in the straight and was destroyed as he had broken his near fore fetlock probably before he came down. Stabilize, well placed, and Sally Lunn, a good way back, toppled over the fallen horse, but both seemed all right when they walked away after the race, Scottish Air, always in the front bunch, stayed on well to win the Hadlow Trot in attractive style. It was her third success on end and she has not reached her limit. Castlebar, the win favouritee, broke at the start. Jack’s Pal led for a mile and aquarter and then stopped. DESERT MAID BARRED Desert Maid, who has been placed on the schooling list, was debarred from starting in the Kerrytown Hack Handicap. Dash o’ Dublin, after being well placed all the way, drew away in the straight for a decisive win. It was a great improvement on his Geraldine form. Milton Abbas ran another good race, but Arabian Night did not run on. His was a disappointing effort after his second at Wingatui. Prince Shad is on the way to better deeds. The favourite, Imperium, ran into a lot of bad luck. The winner’s girth broke about 50 yards from home, enhancing the merit of his performance.
Damascus has been rehandicapped to 7.9 in the Waimea Handicap at Gore.
