Sporting GORE MEETING ON SATURDAY
ACCEPTANCES CLOSE TODAY Acceptances for the crore spring meeting on Saturday close at 5 p.m. today. Dash o’ Dublin The Southland-bred Dash o’ Dublin (Sal-magundi-Fairform) won his first race for iz months when he succeeded in the Kerrytown Hack Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. It was almost 12 months to the day. He won the Spring Stakes at the corresponding meeting which was held on October IS last year. Dash o’ Dublin was bred by Mrs N. J. Dwyer (formerly Mrs A. E. McLaren) and failed to win a race as a two-year-old, and last season he won once in 12 starts. This season he had two starts before his winning start on Saturday. He is now trained by N. J. Dwyer. Formerly he was trained by E. J. Elhs, at Washdyke. A disclosed his brilliance and versatility by winning over a middle distance at Washdyke on Saturday. The week before he was unplaced in the Telegraph Handicap (six furlongs) at Wingatui, his failure causing a big blow to an army of. supporters. He has shown ability to get a distance, and but for a brilliant win at Geraldine he would have been raced against Royal Lancer in the Ranfurly Handicap at Wingatui. His comparative reversal of form within a week is not surprising because of a tendency to unsoundness making him a more or less unreliable proposition. Scottish Air Scottish Air’s success on Saturday would be of interest to Southland sportsmen because of her being nominated for the Invercargill Trotting Cup at the Invercargill meeting next week. Her record in recent weeks is three firsts and a second in four, starts. She shows promise of developing into a brilliant young pacer. She has times of 3.18 1-5 for a mile and a-half and 2.46 3-5 for a mile and a-quarter to her credit, and on that form she will come into decided favour if she is brought to Invercargill. She is trained at Yaldhurst by G. Noble. Damascus Damascus was not long breaking his maiden status. Both at the Otago Hunt and the Dunedin spring meeting he shaped like an early winner, and now that he has joined the ranks of the open hacks more may be heard of him. TENNIS Gladstone Club The opening day and annual meeting of the Gladstone Tennis Club was held on Saturday. Because of the high wind a tournament arranged for the afternoon was abandoned. The following office-bearers were elected: President, Mrs W. E. Hazlett; vice-presi-dents, Mrs W. F. Sturman, Messrs R. C. Abernethy and H. J. Macalister; secretary, Mrs R. M. Hutton-Potts; treasurer, Miss H. Jones; club captain, Mrs T. Wray Wilson; committee, Mesdames B. W. Hewat, E. Nichol, Miss E. Hulse and Mr D. Howarth.
