OBITUARY

MR W. McCORD Mr William McCord, of Gore, died last Saturday after a brief illness. Mr McCord was born at Dunedin on December 10, 1880. being the second son of the late Mr and Mrs William McCord, formerly of Queenstown and later of Gore. He was educated at Dunedin and at Arrowtown, and when he was 21 years of age he moved to Gore to take up a position as engine driver at Green’s coal-mine. He was later employed on the gold dredges at Waikaka Valley and then for eight years he held the position of engine driver at the Benhar pottery works. . . , In 1925 Mr McCord returned to live at Gore and for a number of years he conducted a fish business round the district. Thirty-three years ago he married Miss Agnes Thomson, of Dunedin. He is survived by one son, Private George McCord (2nd N.Z.E.F.), and one daughter, Mrs F. McKenzie (Dunedin). JELLICOE SEA SCOUTS The annual report of the Jellicoe Sea Scouts states that recently the committee, in consultation with the officers, decided to form a complete group which comprises three sections, Rover Sea Scout crew, Sea Scout Troop and a Cub Pack. With the formation of a complete group it was necessary to appoint a group Scoutmaster and it was decided to promote Skipper T. H. Jenkin to this position. Mr Jenkin has been at the head for several years and the troop owes its excellent position to his untiring efforts- During the year Mr Jenkin was given the position of Assistant Sea Scout Commissioner. Dr G. B. Orbell, Rover Sea Scout leader, took Mr Jenkin’s former position of Scoutmaster. The finances are at present in a healthy state. The cost of running a Sea Scout organization is necessarily high, says the report, and donations are welcomed. Many improvements have been made during the year to the building and a new heater has been installed.
