TAXI DRIVER ASSAULTED

AUCKLAND, October 9. A taxi-driver, Herbert O. Smith, received hospital treatment after midnight for a head injury allegedly caused by a blow on the back of the head from a man whom he had driven from Karangahape road to Bowen Avenue. When struck Smith bumped against the car door and fell on to the roadway, the car careering down Bowen Avenue and running into a lamp standard. Smith staggered to the footpath and was assisted by a passing airman to the police station. After hospital treatment he proceeded to his home at Herne Bay. Nothing more was seen of his assailant.
