PRODUCTION OF MAIZE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 6. The increasing demand for maize for poultry, pig farmers and the manufac-. ture of starch and cornflour made it necessary that 10,000 acres should be planted this year, the Hon. W. J. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, said today. A recent survey of the position in the production centres indicated that despite a labour shortage and other cjifficulties the growers were making a special effort to reach the minimum acreage required. The Minister added that prices for the crop would be the same as those paid last year, 5/6 for July delivery, and rising by regular increments to 6/2 for March to June deliveries, these prices being sacks in on trucks or f.o.b. and subject to the merchants’ commission of 5 per cent.
