APPEAL BOARD SITTING
EXEMPTION SOUGHT FOR FISHERMEN A number of appeals on behalf of fishermen were dealt with by the Southland Armed Forces Appeal Board at its sitting in Invercargill yesterday. The majority of the appeals were lodged by the companies employing the men. The others were made by the Director of National Service. Several of the men objected to the appeals and expressed their desire to serve in the armed forces. • The following appeals for fishermen were dismissed, the reservists being released for inunediate service in the armed forces:— Director of National Service for Mason Clyde Evan McQuarrie; Fish Distributers Ltd. for Hugh Alexander Pollock; Pegasus Fishing Co. Ltd. for William Carl Bailey; Fish Distributors Ltd. for Colin Maurice Topi; Director of National Service for Charles Frederick Whipp. All the reservists live at Stewart Island. Appeals for the following fishermen were adjourned sine die on condition that the reservists are available to the Army for training between September 1 and January 31 and serve in the Home Guard (all addresses Stewart Island unless otherwise stated): — Director of National Service for Bertram Eric Hicks; Director of National Service for George Henry Gordon Fife; Director of National Service for Russell Austin Smith, Bluff; Oban Fishing Co. Ltd. for William Herbert Hicks; Reid and Jones for Kenneth E. J. Bradshaw; Fish Distributors Ltd. for Adam P. Hamilton; Fish Distributors Ltd. for Alvin R. Hicks; Fish Distributors Ltd. for Kenneth James Braid; Fish Distributors Ltd. for Edward Ben Hicks; Director of National Service for Charles Joseph Hanning. OTHER APPEALS Of the other appeals dealt with by the board during the day a large number were from or on behalf of farmers. Pyramid Siding; Richard Horne, fanner, Tamatea. An appeal by A; C. Millars Ltd. for Donald Norman Morrison, packer, Invercargill, was adjourned to October 31. An adjournment to January 31, 1943, was granted in the appeal of Miss M. Earwaker for David A. Earwaker, farmer, Walkawa RD. An appeal by A. H. Stott for Edgar Familton, pastrycook, Invercargill, was adjourned to October 31. An appeal by Charles D. B. Diamond, farmer, Glencoe R.D., was adjourned to March 31, 1943. The appeal of Charles William Donald, farmer. Otahutl R.D., was also adjourned to March 31, 1943. The following appeals were dismissed:— Frank Frederick Fischer, auto electrician, Invercargill (as at December 31, 1942); Ernest Excell, builder, Nightcaps.
