SOUTHLAND SOLDIERS IN CASUALTY LISTS

Mr and Mrs A. R. Jenkins, 108 Avenal street, have received advice that their son, Bombardier C. Jenkins, who went overseas with the Ist Echelon, is safe and well. . .... Cabled advice has been received that Sergeant L. F. Hannon is ill in hospital. He is a son of Sergeant A. C. Hannon, National. Military Reserve, and was formerly on the staff of The Southland Times. .... Mr and Mrs Kini, of Wakapatu, have received cabled advice that their son, Gunner S. C. P. Kini, has been discharged from hospital, and that another son, Gunner R. R. Kini, who was reported seriously ill, is now out of danger. Mrs C. Webb, 222 Bowmont street, has received word that her son, Trooper H. J. Webb, is safe and well. Mrs T. Bennett, Baird street,. Invercargill, has received cabled advice that her husband, Gunner R. Bennett, has been discharged from hospital. Mr John McCrostie, Grey street, has received information that his son, Gunner J. C. McCrostie, who was reported wounded a few weeks ago, is on the seriously ill list. Gunner McCrostie previously was wounded last December in fighting in the Middle East. SOLDIERS HONOURED TUATAPERE.—A social was held in the gymnasium in honour of Driver J. Dolan. Mr N. McDonald, chairman of the patriotic committee, presented Driver Dolan with a money belt and the other guests with cigarettes. Mr McFadgen spoke on behalf of the various churches, Mr A. P. McDonald on behalf of the citizens and Mr S. Skipworth for the Returned Services Association. BALFOUR.—Friends and well-wishers from Balfour and district attended a social in the Balfour hall in honour of Privates J. Stevens and C. Pumpa. The greater part of the evening was spent in dancing. During the evening the guests were presented with a cheque each and a parcel of comforts from the women’s social committee.
