Sporting SPANISH LAD TO RESUME
WON £635 IN STAKES LAST SEASON Spanish Lad, winner of the Invercargill Cup last season, will be brought in from the paddock next week to be prepared for another campaign. The Balboa gelding, now eight years old, wintered well and looks ready to undergo a preparation. Raced in the colours of Mr H. G. Mason. Spanish Lad won only two races in 14 starts last season, but he earned £635 in stake money and a £lO/10/- trophy, so it could be said that he had a successful season. In addition to winning the Invercargill Cup he won the President’s Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. He was second to Fidelis in the Awarua Handicap at the Southland winter meeting and he ran fourth to Gold Flight in the Oamaru Winter Cup, his last start. He will be got ready for the Southland spring meeting in November. Southern Sail Southern Sail, winner of the Wyndham and Dunedin Cups last season, who is now being trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke, has been nominated in the Spring Handicap (seven furlongs) at the Ashburton meeting. Short-Priced If Compeer goes to the post in the TallyHo Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday he promises to go out a very short-priced favourite. He beat a high-class field in the August Handicap at Riccarton, and although weighted 181 b above the minimum on Saturday he will not have opposition as strong as he beat previously. Dark Colleen Dark Colleen, who has been paid up for in two races on Saturday, shaped well at the start of last season, but after winning impressively at the Gore spring meeting, she failed' to live up to her early promise and recorded only two thirds in eight subsequent starts. She was taken, to Riccarton. last month and was started three times without running into a place. Won Over £4OOO Horses trained on the Gore and Riverton tracks last season (pacers and trotters excepted) won over £4OOO in stakes. The Gore stables, headed by Bashful Lady (£823), Fidelis (£495) and Phalanx (£315), won £2250, and Riverton stables, headed by Boaform (£440), Gold Flight (£435) Sing Sing (£335) and Winning Flight (£280) won £lBl5. , To Ride Mr Tweedie’s Horses A. Messervy, the Riccarton horseman, has been.engaged to ride Mr D. M. Tweedies horses, Gold Flight, Winning Flight and Alpine, at the Otago Hunt meeting on Saturday. Messervy has been associated with horses raced by Mr Tweedie for several seasons now. Looking Well Although the Riverton horses with engagements at Wingatui on Saturday look fairly forward, it is doubtful if they will be forward enough to run hard races. The condition of the tracks in recent weeks has not permitted much fast work and most or the exercising has been carried out on the beach. Southlandcrs For Wingatui Including pacers and trotters, Southland stables will be represented by about 25 horses at Wingatui on Saturday. Desert Maid r ; Desert Maid, now trained at Oamaru, is well placed in the President’s Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, and if she could be made to reproduce some of the form she showed In her track work at Invercargill last season she would have a second-to-none chance. Her best performance last season was second to Counterlunch on the second day of the Dunedin spring meeting. She was beaten by half a head over six furlongs. Royal Flight ./ Royal Flight, the Salmagundi-Francolih two-year-old in the McLean Stakes, will probably be taken to Wingatui this week with the others of J. Langford’s Riverton team. It will be an educational trip. BASKETBALL draw Following is the draw for basketball matches to be played on Saturday:— News Shield challenge match.—Court 5,2 p.m„ Rata v.
