INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERS
A meeting was recently held of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers, Mr A. T. Gandell being in the chair. Mr W. H. Gregory presented a paper entitled “The Engineer and the War.” It dealt first with the part of the engineer, the scientist, and the technician in the invention, production and maintenance of new weapons and materials of war and synthetic products. Figures of the increasing production of the Allies were quoted and reference made to the enormous quantities of electrical power and man-power required for production under the armament programme. The second part of the paper dealt with the engineer as a fighting executive and with the suitability of the training received by the engineer for the superimposing of the technique demanded by a swift war of movement and machines. A discussion followed and a vote of thanks to the speaker was carried.
