NATIONAL SAVINGS.— The following towns in Southland reached their National Savings quotas last week: —Invercargill, Arrowtown, Balfour, Bluff, Ohai, Riverton, ' Tuatapere and Waikaka. Up to yesterday a sum of £lO3B had been received in Invercargill towards the city’s weekly quota of £2043. Invercargill has now reached its quota for 41 weeks in succession and a special effort is to be made to maintain the record for a full year. RELIEF GOODS REACH LONDON.—The Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the Red Cross Society announces that a further 42 cases of relief goods have reached London. The War Purposes Committee- has received from the liaison officer of the War Organization of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John further indications of how pleased and thankful they are that New Zealand is able to continue sending such valuable help. The War Organization asks the committee to convey sincere thanks to all those who are associated with these generous donations. ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD—Leo Edward Morland, a metallurgist, charged at Wellington with stealing 5650 ounces of alluvial gold valued at £31,496 from the Arahura Gold Dredging Company, was further remanded till September 15.—P.A. MARRIAGE LAWS FLOUTED—A sentence of 12 months’ hard labour was imposed by Mr Justice Smith in the Supreme Court at Wellington on Wallace Shing, aged 41, whose action in going through a form of marriage with a woman the same day that his wife asked him to return to her was described by his Honour as deliberate and wilful flouting of the marriage laws. The prisoner had pleaded guilty at Palmerston North. —P.A.
