NEW DAIRY SEASON
Larger Factories Start Operating Yesterday was the official date for the opening of the new dairying season in Southland. Several of the largest factories opened to receive milk yesterday and others will begin the season’s operations later in the week. By the end of next week practically all the factories in the province will be operating. The present prospects for a substantial output are bright. The dairy cows are coming into production in excellent condition after a favourable winter, and as there are unusually large reserves of feed available they should soon reach high production. Cheese factories will probably suffer a reduction in supply because of the change back to butter production and the output of butter should be substantially increased. The first collections for the season of bobby calves were made yesterday ,_ and considerable numbers' were received. The killing of calves began at Makarewa and Mataura freezing works yesterday. The next collections will be made tomorrow and thereafter on Mondays and Thursdays.
