SEAMEN’S ESTATES LIABLE FOR DUTY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 1. ‘"The same torpedo could kill a merchant seaman and a soldier,” stated a member of the Dominion executive committee of the New Zealand R.S.A. when drawing attention at a recent meeting to the fact that a seaman’s estate would be liable to death duties while that of a soldier would be exempt. The committee was considering a reply from the Minister of. Stamp Duties to the association’s representations that in cases where a merchant seaman died as a result of enemy action the estate should be exempt from death duties. The association submitted that in view of the fact that the estates of deceased members of the naval, military and air forces were exempt from estate duty, it was only fair and reasonable that the estates of merchant seamen whose deaths occur through enemy action should also be exempt. The Minister’s reply stated that the representations would receive the consideration of the Government whenever the question of extending the present exemptions was under review.
