Mr K. H. Smyth, collector of Customs at Invercargill, is expected to return frorq Wellington today. Mr M. J. Scott, of the National Council of Primary Production, visited Gore yesterday and attended a meeting of the Gore Primary Production Council. Mr Scott, who has been visiting Central Otago, left Gore yesterday afternoon for Ashburton. Mr M. W. Grantham, chairman of the Otago and Southland Industrial ManPower Committee, travelled to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr J. W. Woodcock, superintendent of the fields division of the Department of Agriculture for> Otago and Southland, attended a meeting of the Gore Primary Production Council yesterday. Mr Woodcock will also attend a conference at Gore today, when a scheme for the distribution of lime south of Dunedin will be formulated. Mr R. Williams, a radio location officer, left Invercargill by the express yesterday afternoon for Wellington. Mr Williams is one of several officers in the naval service who have received notice to proceed overseas. He was well known in Southland Rugby circles as a member of the Marist-Bluff Rugby team and also as a member of the Southland Rugby team. Mrs E. Burke, 121 Don street, Invercargill, has received advice that her son, Cyril C. Burke, has been promoted to the rank of sub-lieutenant in the Fleet Air Arm.
Advice has now been received that Sergeant James Gough Polson, son of Mrs G. M. Polson, late of Alice street, Invercargill, died in Canada after an operation. 2nd Lieutenant J. McLean, son of Mr A. W. McLean, “Blackmore,” Garston, who recently obtained his commission, has been appointed to a northern antitank battery.
