SUBSIDY ON MILKY DOE RABBITS An explanation of the classes of rabbits on which a subsidy is available was given yesterday by Mr I. R. Wills, of West Plains, chairman of the Southland Rabbit Boards Council. "As there has been some uncertainty about what constitutes a milky doe for the purposes of obtaining the subsidy of 1/- a skin, the Southland Rabbit Boards Council has obtained a definition from the Rabbit Skins Committee,” Mr Wills said. “When the rings on the skin which start with- pregnancy reach the size of a florin the skin becomes available for the subsidy.” Giving advice to rabbiters claiming the subsidy on nesters, Mr Wills said rabbiters had in many cases found difficulty in skinning nesters. There were two methods which became easy with practice. They were: (1) Place the nester In the hand, then close the hand and push from the mouth back. (2) Break the skin at the throat at the back of the ears and right round the neck with the fingers and turn Inside out from neck to tall. ROLLER MILLER COY. (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 27. The Northern Roller Milling Company advises that an interim dividend on preference shares of 5 1-5 per cent, per annum, less security taxes as advised on May 21, is payable in September. ■ SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED GLENHAM.—Private E. Jennings was entertained by Glenham residents at a progressive euchre social and dance. The opportunity was also taken to welcome home two district men, Privates L. Johnstone and A. Dodd. The presentation to the guest of the evening of a wristlet watch was made by Mr A. Rae. Messrs R. Irwin, J. Scott, R. K. Bain, A. C. Bulling and W. Smythe also spoke. SEAWARD DOWNS.—A large number of friends assembled in the Seaward Downs Hall to honour Lance-Corporal W. J. Wylie. Associated with the guest on the stage were visiting soldiers, who were presented with cigarettes. Mr R. S. Weir was chairman, and on behalf of the gathering, wished the guest the best of luck and a safe return. Mr E. McCall, on behalf of the district residents, made a presentation to Lance-Cor-poral Wylie and spoke of his sporting activities and wished him the best of luck and a safe return. KENNINGTON.—The residents of Kennington met in the hall to honour Private lan Fairbairn. Mr R. S. Cloughley, chairman, presented the guest with a money belt containing notes. Mrs Darragh also made a presentation to him on behalf of the Women’s Patriotic Committee.

PUKERAU.—There was a good attendance at a social evening held In the Pukerau Hall in honour of Lieutenant H. W. Milne and Driver D. Speden. Mr G. Gordon was chairman and he made presentations of cheques to the guests on behalf of the residents and parcels of comforts on behalf of the women of the district. Mr J. McDonald also spoke. TAPANUI.—The Tapanui Town Hall was well filled when a social evening was given in honour of Gunner Bruce Kerse. many visitors being present from Kelso and Glenkenich. The Mayor, Mr J. L. Wylie, made a presentation on behalf of the townspeople. WAIKAKA VALLEY.—Lance-Corporal D. H. Smith, of Waikaka Valley, was met at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Henry Smith, by the chairman of the Waikaka Valley Entertainment Committee, Mr A. G. Whitefield, and presented with a shaving outfit on behalf of the residents of the district.

MENZIES FERRY.—Corporal E. Laurie and Private N. McDonald, who are home on leave, were entertained in the Menzies Ferry Hall. Mr G. Stewart, on behalf of the district residents, wished them a safe return and presented Private McDonald with a cheque and Corporal Laurie with a gift. Mrs R. Clark, on behalf of the Comforts Committee, presented each with a parcel of knitted goods and a hold-all. Seven visiting soldiers were presented with cigarettes.

OTAPIRI-LORA GORGE.—A large gathering was present at a social and dance held in the Otapiri hall in honour of LanceCorporal G. Hazlett, Privates J. Caughey and M. Hamilton, sons of well-known farmers of the district. Associated with the guests were nine visiting soldiers. In the absence of the president of the W.D.F.U., Mr G. Blanks expressed pleasure at having the opportunity of seeing the soldiers in the district once again. All soldiers received parcels from the W.D.F.U. OTAUTAU.—Driver J. S. Brass was the guest of honour at a function in the Otautau Town Hall in conjunction with the annual patriotic ball of the W.D.F.U. Associated with him on the stage were 10 visiting soldiers and three soldiers on furlough. Mr W. J. Wesney, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, extended a welcome to the soldiers. Mr A. Edwards conveyed the good wishes of the citizens and Mr W. Fraser represented the R.S.A. The usual monetary presentation was made to the guest by the chairman of the Town Board, Mr A. A. Liddell, who wished him God-speed and a safe return. Miss Ina Beggs also asked him to accept a small gift on behalf of the W.D.F.U. The visiting soldiers were the recipients of cigarettes.
