RECREATIVE AFTERNOONS FOR CHILDREN
Unfavourable weather interrupted the three days’ programme of sport and recreation for school children arranged by the Southland Physical Welfare branch for this week Yesterday afternoon 70 odd children attended the Otakaro playground, where a most successful afternoon was spent. Three groups were organized—boys, girls and infants—and each was in charge of a physical welfare officer. The children entered into the spirit of the play wholeheartedly. All the apparatus was freely used and many ball games were also played. The majority of the children had travelled from the suburbs to take part, very few living in the immediate vicinity being present. A few country children living in the city for holidays were among the most enthusiastic. Next week, weather permitting, the programme will begin at 2 p.m. On Tuesday and Thursday the playing area will be the Otakaro playground and on Wednesday the rose gardens to the east side of the rotunda and north of the duck pond.
