SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED
MOKORETA-REDAN.— One of the largest and most representative gatherings of tills nature was held in the hall when Privates John Hunter and David Parr, sons of two well-known farmers, were entertained. About a dozen soldiers on leave were also present. The guests were introduced by the chairman, Mr T. A. Robinson, and Mr T. Skinner made a presentation. Supporting remarks were made by Messrs J. King, A. Johnstone, G. Anderson and G. F. Mcßae. Mr F. A. Robinson, on behalf of the all purposes committee, presented the guests with parcels and handed presents to the visiting soldiers. MATAURA ISLAND.— A social was tendered Privates W. McKeown, N. McDonald and A. Richardson in the hall. Mr J. A. Graham presented each of the guests with a cheque, and Mr W. J. Rule, on behalf of the district comforts committee, asked them to accept parcels of comforts. Messrs F. Christie, J. Dunlop and J. McLeary also spoke. FAIRFAX.— A social was held .in the Fairfax Hall in honour of Private W. Coster. Mr Stalkes (chairman) expressed, on behalf of the residents, the wish that Private Coster would soon return to the district. Mr Fraser made a presentation to the guest of a money belt, brushes and a shaving outfit. Mrs J. Edie conveyed the good wishes of the W.DJ’.U. and presented Private Coster with a parcel. Associated with the guest of the evening were visiting soldiers, also Gunner Fraser, who has recently returned from overseas. All were given cigarettes.
