ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD

Sum Of £31,496 Involved (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 25. The theft of gold valued at £31,496 was alleged in the Magistrate’s Court today against Leo Edward Morland, aged 41, a metallurgist, and he was remanded for a week. The charge was that Morland on or about October 29, 1940, at Arahura, near Hokitika, being a servant in the employ of Arahura Gold Dredging, Limited, stole 3650 ounces of alluvial gold valued at £31,496, the property of the company. ' The police asked for a reniand, which was granted by the Magistrate, Mr J. L. Stout. Morland was not represented by counsel and had nothing to say.
