SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED
TUATAPERE.—ReIations and friends met in the Tuatapere boxing gymnasium to honour Private Victor Norman, who is home on leave. Mr R. McKenzie spoke on behalf of the citizens and Mr G. Duthie, for the Tuatapere branch of the Returned Services Association. Mr H. McDonald, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, presented the guest with a gift. SEAWARD DOWNS.—Friends and relations were present in the Seaward Downs Hall to honour Lance-Corporal J. Wylie. Mr R. S. Weir (chairman) introduced the guest of the evening and on behalf "of district residents welcomed a number of visiting soldiers and a sailor. Mr E. McCall presented the guest of the evening with a fountain pen and a wallet containing notes. Cigarettes were presented to the other soldiers and the sailor present. WlNTON.—Sergeant A. M. Marshall, Gunner J. R. Fowler, Privates J. T. L. McCallum, A. R- Davis, L. Gerrard, L. McDermott, L. B. Mcllwrick and R. Scully were the guests of honour at a social in the Radio Hall, Winton, on Monday evening. Deputizing for the Mayor, who was indisposed. Mr F. Tilley, on behalf of the residents of the Borough, wished the men a safe return and made a presentation to each soldier. Private McCallum received a presentation from his former mates of the Marshall sawmill. and Mrs G. L. Smart presented knitted articles from the W.D.F.U. Visiting soldiers received cigarettes from the Mayoress, Mrs N. Metzger. . BROWNS.—On Monday evening Private D. Eggelton was entertained by the Browns Patriotic Committee at a social, the entertainment taking the form of a dance. Mr D. Anderson expressed the best wishes of the committee and residents and wished Private Eggelton the best of luck. Five visiting soldiers received cigarettes. ORAWIA. —A large crowd of relations and friends met in the Orawia Hall at a social in honour of Private L. Raynor, of Orawia. and Private J. Glyn. of Eastern Bush. Mr D. McGibbon spoke on behalf of Orawia residents and presented each guest with a watch. Mr N. Moffit. of Eastern Bush, spoke for the people of that district and. Mr A. Finlay spoke on behalf of the Returned Services’ Association. MATAURA.—There was a good attendance at a social evening held at Mataura in honour of two Mataura soldiers. Private W. B. Mefkle and Driver L. Marshall, who were home on leave. The president of the Mataura branch of the R.S.A., Mr C. C. Henry, spoke on behalf of his association and extended good wishes to the guests. The Mayor, Mr C. D. McConnell, made a presentation to each man on behalf of the citizens of the town. WAlKAKA.—District soldiers on leave from camp, Lance-Corporal James Gemmell and Private W. Baxter, were entertained at a social evening in the Waikaka Public Hall, when there was a large attendance. Mr H. Kerse was chairman. Mr D. R. Mclntyre presented each guest with a sum of money on behalf of district residents. WAIKOIKOI.—A social and dance was held in the Waikoikoi Hall in honour of Lance-Corporal Gordon Spittle and Private James Bruce. There was a large attendance and Mr John Burnett was chairman. Mr Burnett made a presentation to both men on behalf of district residents. Each man also received a Testament, and each received a gift from the Waikoikoi Football Club. A presentation was also made to Lance-Cor-[poral W. McKenzie at the end of a service in the Waikoikoi Presbyterian Church. He also received a Testament from the church.
