LITTLE SOUTHLANDERS’ CHRONICLE
My Dear Cousins, Little Southlanders are still writing to ask if they may use both sides of the paper for entries. As I have explained to you before (“What short memories your cousins have,” says Percy Pencil) stories and poems intended for publication must be written on one side of the paper only, but puzzle or any other entries may use both sides. This writing on one side of the paper cannot be avoided, and if you have used two sides and your story is being printed, I have first to write it out again, and you are giving me all that extra work. Entries on tiny scraps have to be pasted on bigger sheets, so are not really economizing on paper after all. Your loving I WISH —PRIZE— There is an expression I don't like to hear, For more often than not It shows envy, I fear. So if we work hard At whatever we're at We wouldn’t hear sayings, “I wish this and that.” 1 For to wish that success Would only come soon, Is as useless as wishing, A slice off the moon. I’ve wished many wishes, So I’ll end with one more, And that is "I wish I were Lord Mayor of Gore.” —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Ray Thompson (12,) 10 Eccles street, Gore. —PRIZE— I wish the life of a nature-lover, Who appreciates birds and flowers and colour. Add to this a measure of comfort and beauty, Aid a will to answer the call of duty.
I wish a life of adventure and fun, In the richness of a New Zealand sun. Add to this a measure of books and health. Wise men will say that I chose wealth. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Margaret McCallum (15), Isla Bank. —PRIZE— I wish I had a life-size doll, With lovely curly hair, Red lips, blue eyes, a little nose. Complexion very fair. I wish I had a brand-new pram. To put my dolly in, With a pretty blue silk coverlet Right up to her little chin. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Sheena McEwen (10), 87 Morton street. —PRIZE— I wish for bright and sunny days. With clear blue skies. I wish for cosy winter fires, And hot mince pies. I wish for lovely gardens, With bright hued flowers. I wish for golden daffodils, And fairy bowers. I wish for happy holidays, Beside the sunny sea; I wish to stay there always, And not go home to tea. —Prize of 1/- to Cousin Audrey Sheed, V.A.C- (16), Mandeville.
