THEFT OF GOODS DURING FIRE

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, August 18. Theft was most despicable. In some countries the guilty person would be shot, commented the Magistrate, Mr H. W. Bundle, when sentencing Roger Jack Wilton, aged 33, to a month’s imprisonment for the theft of articles valued at £B/12/6 during the big fire in Rattray street in April. The Magistrate added that when people suffered misfortune and individuals took advantage of the confusion to steal unprotected goods, the thief deserved no consideration. The police stated that the goods belonged to a guest at the Grand Hotel on the night of the fire. When the hotel was threatened a porter removed the goods to the doorway. They were missing when the owner returned. The goods were recovered yesterday when the accused was seen wearing a stolen jacket.
