FIRE RISK FROM REFUSE TIP
Because of the danger of fire to some huts belonging to the Railways Department, the City Council’s refuse tip, which runs south from Victoria Avenue along the railway line is to be closed. A new tip is to be formed at the south end of Mersey street. At the meeting of the council last night the city inspector, Mr R. Bieakley, reported that during recent weeks the Railways Department had been placing a number of portable huts on its property only about two chains ahead of the tipping face. These huts were liable to be set on fire by sparks carried from the tip by high winds. The district engineer of the department had informed him that it would cost £5O to move the huts, that he had nowhere to put them, that there was no labour available for the job and that the huts would probably have to stay there till the end of the war. He also said that liability would fall on the council should the huts catch fire from the tip.
