SOUTHLAND CASUALTIES

Advice has been received by Mr I. Conner, Otatara, that his brother, Private R. H. Conner, has been killed in action. Private Conner is the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs H. T. Conner, Gladstone. He was educated at the Waihopai school and the Southland Technical College. He had butcher’s shops in Gladstone and in Don street. Mr and Mrs J. Marshall, of Hedgehope, have received cabled advice that their son Driver John Glover Marshall, who is in Egypt, is safe and well. Another son, Corporal Sidney Collins Marshall, who is in a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, is also well. Advice has been received in Invercargill that Private P. K. Barry, who was reported wounded, has now been discharged from hospital. Mrs A. S. G. Savage, Gore, has received advice that her son, Gunner Edward P. Savage, who was recently wounded, has now been discharged from hospital. ; \ Mr and Mrs T. W. Dyer, of Winton, have received word that their son, Private H. G. Dyer, who was reported wounded, has been discharged from hospital. , , , Private J. S. Payne, who has been reported missing and in a later message not missing but wounded, is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. S. Payne, of North Makarewa. He went overseas with the 6th Reinforcements. He served his apprenticeship and was later employed as a carpenter by Mr C M. Dore, of Mossburn. He was a member of the Mossbum Defence Miniature Rifle Club and Tennis Club, being chosen on several occasions to represent Mossbum and Southland in shooting matches with Otago.
