NEXT CALL-UP FOR ARMY

Men Aged 35, 36 . And 37 (P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 17. A further list of men for service with the armed forces will be published at an early date. In making this announcement the Minister of National Service, the Hon. W. J. - Broadfoot, said the ballot would contain the names of men 35, 36 and 37 years of age with children, together with the inflow in glasses previously called up for military service. Approximately 21,000 men would be called up on this occasion and their names would be gazetted . on September 15. The men would be medically examined as soon as possible, but no indication could at present be given when they would be required to enter eamp. The withdrawal of further men from industry to enter the forces, said Mr Broadfoot, would necessitate the application of measures of industrial reorganization designed to offset those losses in so far as they affected the more essential industries, and further and more drastic curtailments of nonessential industries and services were inevitable. Up to the end of July more than 5000 persons had been directed into essential industries, and more than 2000 essential workers who would ordinarily have left those industries were prevented from doing so in terms of the National Service Emergency Regulations. ■ , , In order to ensure that these ana related measures of rationalization and reorganization of industry and mobilization of the Dominion’s latent labour resources were carried out with the maximum effectiveness, the War Administration had plans in hand at present involving a complete examination of industries and services. This examination would be merely a prelude to further acceleration of measures designed to meet the needs of the armed forces while at the same time maintaining those industries and services which were essential to the community.
