SOUTHLAND MEN IN CASUALTY LISTS

Private James G. Ramsay, who has been reported wounded, is the second son of the late Mr Peter Ramsay, of North Chatton. He was born at Gore and he received his education at the North Chatton school and the Southland Technical College. Private Ram-’ say took an interest in Rugby football and he played for Southern Star in the Southern District. Before going overseas he was employed in the sawmilling industry at Niagara. Private P. K. Barry, reported wounded, is the youngest son of Mr J. Barry, 200 Ythan street. Bom in Invercargill 29 years ago, Private Barry was educated at the Orepuki school and latet at the Invercargill Marist Brothers school. He was a keen footballer, representing the Western District and West Coast. He went overseas with the 2nd Echelon and served in Greece, Crete and Libya. He has one brother in the Navy and one in a territorial camp. . Gunner Norman Robert King, who is reported to have been wounded, is the third son of Mr and Mrs W. D. F. King, East Gore. Bom at Balclutha 26 years ago, Gunner King received his education at the Gore Public School. He was later employed for two years on Mr J. Wylie’s farm at Pukerau and he then took up shearing work with his brother. He enlisted from Balfour, going overseas with the 3rd Echelon. He was a member of the Balfour Football Club. Gunner King took part in the fighting in Greece and during the previous Libyan campaign he was a prisoner at Bardia for six weeks.

Word has been received by Mr T. D. Suddaby that his eldest son, Private T. Suddaby, has been wounded. Private Suddaby was educated at Orepuki and for some years was employed on farms in that district. He was a ipember of the Orepuki Tennis Club. At the time of his departure for overseas with the 2nd Echelon, he was employed by the Tuatapere Saw Milling Company. Private Suddaby saw service in Greece and has three other brothers in the forces, Leading Aircraftman G. Suddaby, in Canada, Private L. Suddaby, prisoner of war, and Private A. Suddaby, recently returned from overseas. Private D. Heath, who is reported missing believed prisoner of war, is the second son of Mr and Mrs G. Heath, Mataura Island, where he was born and educated. For a time he was employed on his father’s farm, but at the time of his enlistment with the 2nd Echelon he was working on a station in the Masterton district. Private Heath saw action in Greece, Crete and Libya. Private R. Bennett, who has been mentioned in a casualty list, husband of Mrs T. Bennett, Invercargill, and son of Mr T. A. Bennett, Papatotara, was born at Waimatuku and educated at the Papatotara school. For many years he was engaged in farming in the Tuatapere district and in agricultural contracting. Before entering camp he was employed by Taylor Bros., road contracting. Cabled advice has been received that Gunner R. R. Kini, of Wakapatu, who was recently reported wounded, is now reported to be seriously ill. Cabled advice has been received by Mr H. Knowler, Te Wae Wae, that his son, Private C. Knowler, has been discharged from hospital. Mrs J. C. Braxton has received advice by from her brother, Corporal J. S. Daniel, that he is safe and well.
