A.T.C. SPORTS CONTEST
INVERCARGILL WINS RUGBY MATCH Rugby football, basketball and table tennis matches were played in Invercargill on Saturday between teams representing the Dunedin and Invercargill squadrons of the Air Training Corps. Invercargill won the football and Dunedin the basketball and table tennis. Much of the brightest football of the afternoon was provided by the Invercargill and Dunedin teams which played in the curtain-raiser to the Army match at Rugby Park. The Invercargill team won by 12 points to 6, but there was not six points between the teams. On the contrary, they were very evenly matched. Both had scoring opportunities, and the Invercargill team, though its members were playing together for the first time, gained a points advantage by making better use of its chances. Dash and determination were evident throughout the game, and right to the finish there were bright incidents which entertained the spectators. Invercargill held the advantage in the first half and scored six points to Dunedin’s three. The second half favoured Dunedin, but again Invercargill won a points advantage of six to three. For Invercargill tries were scored by Raines and Gray and two penalty goals were kicked by Bloomfield. Rowley scored a try for Dunedin and Tomkins kicked a penalty goal. Mr R. G. Webb was referee.
INDOOR GAMES Dunedin proved too good for Invercargill at table tennis, though Invercargill produced the best player, R. F. Jans, who defeated every member of the opposing team fairly comfortably. The best match was that between Jans and S. C. Chin, a young Chinese who headed the Dunedin; team. The result was: Dunedin 21 matches, Invercargill 14 matches. At basketball two selected Dunedin teams played the four Invercargill teams which are taking part in the weekly competition. The match between the two leading teams, Dunedin A and Kittyhawks (Invercargill), produced a splendid exhibition and ended in a draw at 22-all. The Dunedin players made the pace, but Invercargill rose to the occasion with brilliant handling and forceful attack. The Invercargill team comprised P. D. Skelt (captain), C. W. Snow, S. F. Walker, C. V. Todd and I. J. Smith. The other matches resulted as follows: Dunedin A 37, Hurricanes (Invercargill) 11; Dunedin B 14, Spitfires (Invercargill) 13; Dunedin B 22, Tomahawks 7. More than 30 Dunedin cadets made the trip, under Flying Officer Ivo Carr, officer commanding the Dunedin Squadron, and Pilot Officer F. Forrester, squadron adjutant. After the matches on Saturday the visitors were entertained at dances by the Welcome Club and the women’s committee of the Southland Swimming Executive. They returned north by the train last evening.
