OBJECTION TO WORKING IN SOAP FACTORY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. August 14. A woman selling soap in a department store pleaded conscientious scruples against wrapping it in a factory when she appealed before the Man-Power Committee against the decision of the Lower Hutt man-power officer. The appellant objected to being directed to any industry, claiming the right to choose her own occupation. The appeal was dismissed. The appellant. Mrs G. J. P. Shaw, had refused to report for work at a soap factory. She said soap-making might seem quite harmless, but glycerine, which was a byproduct, was used in high explosives. Her husband was in a defaulters’ detention camp and she held similar views. She objected to being directed to any kind of work.
