JUSTICES OF PEACE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING

The fourteenth annual meeting of the Southland Justices of the Peace Association was held in the Tudor Lounge yesterday afternoon. The president, Mr W. A. Ott, presided and extended a special welcome to Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., Inspector H. Martin, Inspector A. S. Bird (a former inspector of police in Invercargill) and Mr A. W. Arnold (superintendent of the Borstal). The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. Before the election of officers the members stood as a mark of respect to the memory of Mr T. H. Watson, Mr F. Moore (Winton), Mr A. Home (Mataura) and Mr Andrew Martin (Gore), who had died during the year. The election of office-bearers resulted: President, Mr W. A. Ott; vicepresidents, Mrs Stanley Brown, Messrs J. Ward, J. Fisher (Otautau) and M. Miller; hon. solicitor, Mr G. J. Reed; council Messrs J. Pickard, S. Rice (Wyndham), T. Pryde, A. S. Froggatt, A. L. Adamson, R. J. Cumming and Lieutenant-Colonel W. Bell; registrar, Mr A. W. Jones; hon. auditor, A. L. Adamson. . Mr Ott stated that he had received an apology from Judge A. McCarthy, who was unable to attend and address the members. Mr A. W. Jones then gave a brief but interesting talk on a visit he had made to the Malaya States some years ago.
