MAGISTRATE’S COURT

(Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, SJVI.)

Judgment was entered for the plaintiffs by default in the following civil claims:— Warren Boyd v. Thomas Jones (East Gore) for £7B/18/-, costs £5/2/6; William Carter v. Albert Lloyd (Mataura), for 19/- costs only. Herbert Carter (Redan) was charged with failing to give an order for one dozen bottles of beer intended to be taken into a no-licence area. He was also charged with having liquor in his possession near a dance hall at Gore while a dance was in progress. He pleaded guilty to both charges. On the first charge he was convicted and fined £2/10/-, costs 15/-, and on the second charge he was convicted and fined £l/10/-. costs 12/-. Charged with having liquor in his possession near a dance hall while a dance was in progress, Cyril E. Gibson (Kelso) wrote pleading guilty. He was convicted and fined £l/10/-, costs 12/-. Alphonsus Kevin Dowling, a soldier, wrote pleading guilty to a similar charge. He was convicted and fined £l/10/-, costs 10/-.

Robert Neumant Wendon) wrote pleading guilty to a charge of allowing stock to wander on the main Wendon road. He was convicted and fined £l. costs 12/-.

In giving his reserved decision in the case of David McNab, a shearer, of Pukerau. who was charged with permitting a motor garage belonging to him to be used for the purpose of storing liquor for John Trapski, the Magistrate said that there was a doubt about the question of storing and the defendant must get the benefit of that doubt. There was, however, sufficient evidence to show that the defendant had aided and abetted Trapski in having liquor in his control. The charge was dismissed and the Magistrate directed the police to issue another information against McNab for aiding and abetting Trapski. PERSONAL— Advice that her husband, Sapper J. H. Corbett, is safe and well, has been received by Mrs Corbett, of Gore. Mr C. E. R. Peterson, who has been attached to the clerical staff of the goods office at the Gore railway station for the last three years, has been notified of his transfer to Waiplata. He will be ’succeeded at Gore by Mr H. Pomeroy, of Waiplata.
