CHILDREN’S PARADE AND PROCESSION
MARCH THROUGH CITY ON SATURDAY
A children’s parade and a patriotic procession will be held in the city on Saturday morning as a prelude to the Rugby match at Rugby Park in the afternoon between teams representing the Otago Mounted Rifles and the Army (Invercargill). The children’s parade will move off from the corner of Leet and Dee streets at 10.30 a.m. and will proceed through the main streets of the city. The procession, which will begin at Victoria Avenue, will move off at 11 aun.
At the Town Hall the salute will be taken by Lieutenant-Colonel H. C. Mackenzie, officer commanding No. 12 military area. He will be accompanied by the Mayor, Mr A. Wachner. Dr A. Owen-Johnston, president of the Invercargill Returned Services Association, will take the salute at the Great War Memorial, and the salute at the South African War Memorial will be taken by Mr R. N. Todd, president of the South African War Veterans’ Association. The children’s parade will be dismissed at the Town "Hall, but the procession will march back through the main streets of the city. Tentative arrangements have been made to entertain in the evening members of the Otago Mounted" Rifles and Army teams and also members of the Air Training Corps teams of Otago and Southland which will play the curtainraiser at Rugby Park. It is proposed, to invite them to be present at a dance at the Welcome Club.
The whole of the proceeds of the football match will be devoted to patriotic purposes, and the Mayor stated yesterday that It would be appreciated if all other sporting bodies could see their way to cancel their fixtures set down for Saturday afternoon.
