MONEY STOLEN FROM SAFE— On Monday night the premises of Auto Wreckers, Tay street, were entered by a thief or thieves and about £3 and several gallons of petrol were stolen. Tools were used to force open the safe. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS— The primary schools under the Southland Education Board will elose on Friday, August 21, for the term holidays and will reopen on Monday, September 7. The Southland Boys’ and Girls' High Schools and the Southland Technical College (day and evening classes) will also close on August 21, but will have a longer holiday. The Technical College will resume on Monday. September 14, and the High Schools the following day. SIB JAMES ALLEN’S BEQUESTS.— Under the will of Sir James Allen, whose estate was sworn at £45,000, the following bequests are made: £5OO to All Saints’ Church; £2OO to the Salvation Army: £5OO to the Otago University, and £2OO to the New Zealand nurses memorial fund.—P.A. ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES.— By notices published in the latest issue of The Gazette the following have been declared essential Industries for the purposes of the National Service Emergency Regulations: The manufacture of tobacco and the redrying of tobacco leaf, the Public Service as defined in the Public Service Act 1912, the bakeries of all pastrycook establishments, and all those businesses coming within the scope of the New Zealand (except Westland) Plumbers’ and Gasfitters’ Award.
