NEW COMMANDER IN NORTHERN IRELAND
GENERAL POWNALL IS APPOINTED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, September 27. Important changes are announced by the War Office. Lieutenant-General Sir H. R. Pownall, Inspector-General of the Home Guard, has been appointed to the command of the British troops in Northern Ireland. General Pownall served as Chief of Staff under General Lord Gort during the recent operations in France. Upon the formation of the Home Guard he was appointed to the newly-created post of Inspector-General in order that his experience might be utilized to coordinate and supervise the organization of this new and highly important force. His place as Inspector-General of the Home Guard is being taken by Major T. R. Eastwood.
Major Eastwood distinguished himself in the Great War, serving at Gallipoli, in Egypt and in France. Immediately before the outbreak of the present war he was commandant of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. During the recent operations in France, including the Dunkirk evacuation, he served with distinction as a Major on the staff under General Gort. The appointment of Major Eastwood as Inspector-General of the Home Guard is an indication of the importance attached to the training and supervision of the Home Guard.
