GOLF

CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WYNDHAM The finals for the Wyndham Golf Club’s championships have now been completed. Conditions in the morning were unpleasant, but improved in the afternoon, although a strong westerly wind made good golf very difficult. In the A grade P. B. Barnett beat E. A. Pankhurst 3 and 2, while in the Plate, L. Harper always had a good lead and won by 5 and 3 from J. H. Henderson. In the B grade Tangney beat Shepherd by one hole after a very even game. At the end of the morning round Barnett was 2 up. In the afternoon the first hole was halved in bogey figures and Pankhurst won the last with a par 4. Barnett was again 2 up after winning McDonald’s in regulation figures and the next two holes were halved. Both had good 4’s at Elbow and Barnett increased his lead to 3 up with a win at Windmill. Pankhurst got a hole back with a win at Waterloo and Plantation was halved. Bogeys at The Pit and Clubhouse put Barnett 4 up. McDonald’s was halved in bogey figures and Pankhurst, who was now playing well, won Slippery and Boiling Pot and was only 2 down. Pankhurst nit a long ball into the wind at Elbow and Barnett pushed his towards the rough. His second was on the green and Pankhurst was short. Pankhurst’s third was four feet away, but he failed to sink the putt and Barnett was dormy. A half in bogey at Windmill ended the match in Barnett’s favour, 3 and 2. INVERCARGILL LADIES’ CLUB The following are the best scores in a sealed hole match played at Otatara on Thursday: Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones, 42-4-33; Mrs H. M. Smith, 46-8-38; Mrs B. W. Hewat, 57-18-39; Miss M. McCallum, 46-7-39; Miss L. Henderson, 45-5-40. Mrs Hall-Jones won on the count back.

The best score for September in the Handyside Cup competition was returned by Mrs R. C. Cook, 113-36-77.
