A Diary of Sport BOWLS SEASON FIXTURES
Competitions Are Arranged
PATRIOTIC EVENTS TO BE PLAYED. ’ By JACK HIGH Although none of the bowling greens in Southland has been officially opened for play several are now in use and for the last week or two members of some of the city clubs have been bowling. Three or four clubs were to have held opening functions today, but because of the patriotic sports pageant at Rugby Park a postponement was made until next week. Clubs which are known to be opening next Saturday are Northend, Waikiwi and three or four of the country clubs. The. management committee of the Southland Bowling Centre has lost no time in getting the new season’s programme ready. Competitions will be begun early in November, the interclub (Saturday) games starting on November 2, the four-rink championship on November 5 and the city rinks competition on November 12. The committee decided to carry out the same competitions as last year and to play the Saturday games on successive Saturdays except where provision has been made for special and patriotic tournaments and for the usual TownCountry and champion-of-champions fixtures. Actually the decision of the management committee is contrary to the mandate given to it by the delegates at tire annual meeting of the Centre, but when it is explained that only 12 Saturdays are available for the inter-club games the action of the committee will not be condemned. PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENTS Two Saturdays have been set aside for clubs desirous of conducting oneday tournaments for the Patriotic Fund, and November 25 (King’s Birthday holiday) has been pencilled as the date of a patriotic rink tournament to be conducted by the Southland Bowling Centre. No prize money will be provided for this tournament; . instead framed certificates will be given to the winners. Other special dates which have been arranged by the committee are: February 1, Southland Shield Rink competition; February 8, Southland v. Otago, at Dunedin; February 22, champion-of-champions pairs; March 1, champion-of-champions singles; March 8, championship finals; December 7, Town-Country matches on country greens; January 18, Town-Country on town greens. The following committees have been appointed for the 1940-41 season: Fixtures, Messrs L. Gray, S. C. K. Smith, A. McKenzie and A. Kynaston; postponement, Messrs A. Derbie, D. K. Torrance and D. M. Scandrett; selection, Messrs A. Derbie, N. W. McGorlick, S. C. K. Smith, F. Tilley and I. W. Martin. The New Year tournament dates have been fixed for December 31 to January 4 (inclusive). An alteration in the system of playing the post-section play has been made; no section ties will be played, all qualifiers going forward instead of being required to play sevenend or half-hour ties. This reform will be greatly appreciated by tournament players and it will do away with the time-wasting tie-playing system. Applications from 12 clubs for dates for one-day tournaments have been received by the management committee. Northend has been granted Labour Day for its annual tournament. The Gore Club has applied for November 25 and Winton Central has applied for February 22. The Waihopai Club has been granted permission to conduct a tournament on trades picnic day. Applications have also been received from Otautau (Good Friday); Riverton, Aparima, Ohai, Makarewa, James Macpherson, Southland and Georgetown, but dates have not yet been allotted. The Orepuki Club will in future be known as the Orepuki and R.S.A. Club. Many new members have joined up and it is expected that the club will take a practical part in the centre activities this year.
