GUIDE NOTES

KNITTED COMFORTS FOR MERCHANT NAVY

By BIG GUIDE In last week’s notes, instructions were given for knitting a balaclava and a muffler. The following are instructions for mittens and a chest protector, which some Guides may prefer to make. It is hoped that Guides all over Southland are already busy with their needles. It is surprising how quickly a piece of knitting will grow, even if it is picked up only at odd moments. How many articles can Southland produce before the end of October?

MITTENS.—2oz 4-ply, 1 pair No. 12 and 1 pair No. 9 needles. Cast on 60 stitches on No. 12 needles. Work in rib of 2 plain, 2 purl for 4 inches. Change to No. 9 needles and knit 6 rows in stocking stitch. Commence the thumb: Ist row, knit 25, knit twice into the next stitch, knit to the end of the row; 2nd row, and every alternate row, purl; 3rd row, knit 25, knit twice into the next stitch, knit 1, knit twice into the next stitch, knit to the end of the row; sth row, knit 25, knit twice into the next stitch, knit 3, knit twice into the next stitch, knit to the end of the row; 7th row, knit 25, knit twice into the next stitch; knit 5, knit twice into the next stitch, knit to the end of the row. Continue working, increasing two stitches between the increase rows until there are 21 stitches—thus: Knit 25, knit twice into She next stitch. Knit 21, knit twice into the next stitch, knit to the end next row, purl. This concludes the increasing for the thumb. Next row, knit 51, turn purl back for 26 stitches, now work backwards and forwards on the 26 stitches. Knit together the first two stitches on each row for 6 rows. Change to No. 12 needles and rib knit 2, purl 2 for 3 rows, cast off loosely. That completes the thumb. Place the remaining stitches on one needle, join in wool and knit 10 rows in stocking stitch. Then rib knit 2, purl 2 for 6 rows. Cast off loosely. Fold the mitten in half and sew neatly, stitch for stitch. Do not draw tightly. Sew up the thumb likewise. CHEST PROTECTORS.-4oz of 4-ply wool, 1 pair No. 8 needles. Cast on 72 stitches. Alternately knit 2, purl 2, for 48 rows. Row 49: Cast off first 8 stitches and rib to the end of the row. Row 50: Same as last row, leaving 56 stitches. Rib for 8 more rows. Next 10 rows knit plain increasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every row by picking up one between the 3rd and 4th stitches. There will now be 66 stitches. Now knit plain for 76 rows (38 ribs). Next 20 rows slip 1, knit 1, knit 2 together at the beginning of each row, until there are 46 stitches left. Cast off. Sew up the sides of the ribbing to make a collar and fold it in half. Work a row of double crochet round all edges.
