DEPOT OPENING MONDAY

RED CROSS SOCIETY’S WORK APPEAL FOR SUPPORT OF PUBLIC A Red Cross receiving depot will be opened in Esk street, Invercargill, on Monday at 2 o’clock by the Southland Provincial Red Cross Society. The premises have been given rent free for 12 months to the society by Mr F. G. Hall-Jones. “The depot has been fitted out and members of the various branches throughout the district have indicated that they will be prepared to be in attendance daily from 2 o’clock till 4, o’clock when they will gladly give advice on any matters for the welfare of the work or answer any inquiries by the public” said the president of the centre (Mr J. D. Campbell) yesterday. “The depot is dependent solely on voluntary subscriptions and help, and the object of the movement is to provide equipment necessary to meet any emergency in Southland and to be . a feeder to outlying sub-centres and districts. It has also to make up out of bulk stock various medical garments and equipment, such as bandages of all kinds, binders, hospital gowns, singlets, capes, jackets, socks, handkerchiefs, small pillows for persons with amputated limbs, hot water bottle covers and operation stockings for the district’s quota to equip the hospitals on transports conveying various members of reinforcements overseas.

“It should be clearly understood that money previously given for Red Cross work is. used for the Sick and Wounded Fund or for other purposes that the general council may decide. This fund has now been satisfactorily subscribed to. “This appeal is made to the public of Southland in the belief that it will, as in all other worthy objects, give it wholehearted support. Every person may rest assured that the committee will use the money for the comfort and use of Southland boys who are fighting overseas. Those connected with the movement feel that it is due to those brave men that they should do their share to provide them with all necessary comforts, and at the same time have on hand, in case of an emergency, such supplies as will be necessary.” All donations would be placed to the credit of the Southland Provincial Centre and not to the national fund, he said
