FUND NOT BEING CLOSED

FIRST PROVINCIAL QUOTA CONTINUOUS APPEAL , SUGGESTED “The appeal for assistance for the victims of air raids will be continuous and we are anxious to receive funds for this purpose,” said the chairman of the executive of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council, Mr W. Grieve, yesterday, in reply to questions about the future of the appeal. At a meeting of the executive this week it was decided to inform the National Patriotic Fund Board that the Southland Council was opposed to increasing its quota of £ll5O towards the first contribution of £lOO,000 from New Zealand.

Mr Grieve explained that of the £lOO,OOO sent from the Dominion, £75,000 was contributed from the Red Cross Fund and the provincial councils would find the balance of £25,000. Any increase in the quota of the provincial councils w 7 ould have the effect of reducing the amount to be found from the Red Cross Fund. In reaching its decision to oppose any increase in its quota, the Southland Council was merely expressing its opinion that the call on the Red Cross Fund should not be lessened and that provincial councils should retain funds subscribed in excess of their quotas as amounts to be devoted to future contributions from New Zealanders for distress in London. “The Southland fund will not be closed when it reaches £1150,” Mr Grieve said, “because we want to have money in hand to contribute to the London air raid victims from time to time. For this reason we are appealing to the public not to lessen its support for this worthy object. Contributions made to the fund will be earmarked for distress in London.”

SOUTHLAND FUND NOW £1348 DONATION OF £2OO FROM MEAT COMPANY The Southland fund now totals £1348/11/8. Sturman) and £6B/6/3 being paid into The Southland Times office. Yesterday’s subscriptions included one of £2OO from the Southland Frozen Meat Company, Limited, and 12 donations of £5 or more. ATTRACTIVE POSTER

Copies of a poster designed by the Governor-General (Lord Galway) for the Dominion-wide patriotic appeal, which aims at raising £1,000,000, have been received by the treasurer of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council (Mr W. F. Sturman). The objects for which the money is to be raised are the relief of London air raid victims, provision of comforts for members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and rehabilitation of soldiers and their dependants after the war. The poster, which is to be used in the first period of the appeal, gives prominence to relief for London air raid victims. At the top of the poster in bold red letters, are the words, “Heart-to-Heart Appeal” and in the middle of the poster, also in large lettering, the words, “Help for London.” “Comforts for Fighting Services” and “Rehabilitation for Men and their Dependants” follow, and in the bottom panel is the slogan, “Support the Provincial Patriotic Appeal.” . . Two hearts printed in red and joined by a single link to symbolize the ties between Britain and New Zealand are a prominent feature of the poster. Superimposed on the upper heart is a view of the tower of Big Ben, London, with the statue of Boadicea in the background, and on the lower heart there is a map of New Zealand. FUND OPENED AT GORE A fund for the relief of distress among London air raid victims has been opened at Gore in response to several requests and already £64/15/has been subscribed.
