Of all its innumerable characters, not one, but is a clear-cut individual, who holds the reader's interest on his own merit. This is a big novel of sheer beauty, racing with humour, rich in human interest. The central characters are a family of coal-miners living in Wales about 50 years ago. There is nothing sordid about the story, though the fortunes of the family decline with the beginning of the terrific economic pressure of the industry. Much of it does pluck at the heart strings, but there is never a note of falsity in it, and there is plenty of comedy as well as of tragedy.
