PROVINCIAL FUND The following subscriptions were received by Mr Sturman yesterday:— £ s d

PLAYHOUSE TO BE RAFFLED A wonderful and unusual plaything is to be the first prize in a raffle to be conducted by the Invercargill Traders’ Patriotic Committee, which is organizing a lucky packet and gala day for November’ 1 in aid of the fund for the relief of distress among London airraid victims. The prize is a children’s playhouse in the form of a miniature bungalow, and it is of such a size that three or four children could easily enjoy an afternoon tea party in its living room.

The house was made by the staff of the joinery factory of Calder Mackay Ltd., Invercargill, who worked at the job in their spare time, and the necessary materials weijp supplied by the firm. Shop assistants in the employ of the firm decorated the interior of the bungalow.

The dimensions of the house are 16 feet in length, 8 feet in width and 9 feet in height. The living room, which has a ceiling 5 feet in height, is tastefully papered. In addition there are a bedroom and a kitchen enamelled and equipped in the most approved modern style. The house is lit by electricity supplied by a battery so placed as to be out of the reach of children.

The playhouse was originally offered to the Southland Fighter Aeroplane Committee, but the fund to provide fighter aeroplanes for Britain was fully subscribed before arrangements could be made to make use of the gift.
