SHEARING LABOUR SHORTAGE
FARMERS ASKED TO BOOK EARLY
In view of the fact that there will probably be a shortage of shearers this year, Southland farmers are advised to make early arrangements for booking men. Those who cannot obtain the necessary labour are asked to communicate with the Southland Primary Production Council before October 10, after which date the council will try to arrange for all needs to be met. Members of district primary production committees are urged to find out the requirements of their districts and to keep in touch with the council. Applications for shearing labour which are received after October 10 cannot be dealt with.
In conjunction with the Farmers’ Union, the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association is making inquiries' to see whether shearing classes for beginners would receive sufficient support to warrant the necessary arrangements being made. Men anxious to learn shearing are asked to notify the secretary of the two organizations (Mr A. L. Adamson) as soon as possible. If the response is satisfactory, it is proposed to arrange for practical work to be undertaken in a country shed. Expert tuition will be given in the shearing and classing of wool for 10 days late in October' or early in November.
