MATAURA

DEFINITE INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP TENNIS CLUB HAS GOOD YEAR There was a fair representation of members of the Mataura Citizens’ Tennis Club at the annual meeting held in the Guide Room. Mr C. A. Thorn was chairman. The annual report stated that the membership showed a definite increase, a pleasing feature being the number of junior players, and it was to them that the club looked to sustain its strength. The club had entered a team in the B grade competition, going through the season with only one loss, the first match, and it was awarded the Piller memorial shield. Those members who were not included in the match teams were catered for by friendly inter-club games. At the end of the season the two outer courts were in good order. A new departure was the organizing of social gatherings at the homes of members. By this means the finances were improved. Mr J. Calder was farewelled before his departure overseas on active service.

A community sing, at which Mr R. McKenzie officiated, proved a great success and thanks were due to him and to the supporting artists, including Mesdames O. E. Hubener, J. Watson, H. J. Hill and W. McLeod, Messrs A. Jones, D. Kaye and A. R. Richardson, the report stated. From the proceeds of the sing £5 had been sent to the Mataura patriotic fund and £5 to the South Dunedin Community sing. The club had had a successful season, completing the payments on the pavilion to make it clear of debt. The committee also recommended that trophies be provided for competitions and that something be done to encourage juniors. The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr C. A. Thorn; vice-presi-dents, Dr Woodhouse, Miss A. G. Adam, Mrs J. H. Stalker and Mr I. Haggitt; secretary, Miss I. Knowles; club captain, Mr Max Butel; deputy-captain, Mr V. Alderson; committee, Mrs H. McKinnon, Mrs Shore, Miss Russell, Messrs A. Richmond, M. Butel, E. Newman and V. Alderson; delegate to Eastern District Tennis Sub-Association, Mr Butel.

Subscriptions were left unaltered. Several new members were elected.
