PATRIOTIC WORK IN DISTRICT
COMMITTEE MEETS AT RIVERTON
The meeting of the Riverton Patriotic Committee was held in the Council Chambers, Dr C. H. Gordon . being chairman. Those present were: Mesdames J. W. Martin, H. Roberts and A. F.‘ Webb; Dr E. S. Fossey; Messrs J. W. Martin, F. L. Girvan, F. Conn, V. Rose, H. Allison, E. T. Eade, J. A. Martin, G. O. Cassels, C. R. J. Inder and the secretaries, G. H. Millow and R. Walker. Constable G. H. Webb was also present.
The Riverton Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote suggesting the organization of a scheme where the wives, and in some cases, the parents of men serving overseas, could have assistance in gardening and hedge cutting. Mr F. L. Girvan remarked that the Returned Soldiers’ Association felt that in the cases of wives whose husbands were serving overseas, assistance should be given, as hedge cutting was not a woman’s job. Mr J. W. Martin stated that Southland teachers were arranging to attend to the gardens of their co-teachers who were on service.
Mi- Girvan suggested that the scheme should be extended to all men serving with the forces, whether in the Home Guard or overseas, and after some discussion the following committee was appointed to confer with the Returned Soldiers’ Association: Dr Fossey, Messrs H. Allison and J. W. Martin.
The secretary of the Colac Bay Patriotic Committee wrote stating his committee’s decision to incorporate with Riverton and appointed Mrs F. Belsham and Mr H. Spear as delegates. Mr P. Hennessy, of the Invercargill Kennel Club, had suggested the running of dog trials and a parade in Riverton towards the end of next month, and a committee consisting of Messrs F. L. Girvan, E. T. Eade and J. W. Martin was set up to confer with Mr J. A. C. Mackenzie, who had proposed the trials. The treasurer reported that the amount collected to date was £1331/5/3. Raffles drawn under police supervision resulted: Quilt, Mr R. Lyon; cake, Mr J. L. McLean; doll, Mrs Cumming; lingerie set, Mrs L. Weir.
BALANCE-SHEET SHOWS CREDIT TENNIS CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING ■1 The 19th annual general meeting of the Riverton Tennis Club was held in More’s committee room. The club captain, Mr J. A. Lee, was chairman. Those present were: Miss P. M. MacDougall, Messrs R. Tweedie, J. J. Banks, R. H. Henry, H. D. MacDougall, D. Corkery, E. V. Bardsley and A. McKenzie. ' The annual report and balance-sheet, regretted the loss of the club president, Mr C. B. Matthewson, and congratulated him on his promotion; also the secretary, Mr J. J. Banks, who was engaged on military duties. Because of the broken weather and war-time restrictions, the programme for the season was not completed. An A grade team was entered in the Western District competition and finished second equal. The club extended its congratulations to the Tuatapere team, which was the successful winning team. Messrs A. T. Strang, T. L. de Clifford and L. W. de Clifford were on active service. The balance-sheet disclosed a balance of £22/9/5, and an outstanding credit of £5. Thanks were expressed to all who had helped in the work of the club. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. A. Lee; vice-president, Mr J. J. Banks; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. H. Henry; women’s captain, Miss P. M. MacDougall; men’s captain, Mi’ H. D. MacDougall; signing officers, secretary and president; committee, Mrs J. V.’. Martin, Misses E. I. More and P. Bailey, Messrs R. Tweedie and D. Corkery; auditor, Mr J. Crawford; school representative, Mr J. W. Martin; subassociation delegates, Messrs Lee and MacDougall; selection committee, secretary and both captains; works committee, Messrs R. Tweedie, C. Hutchinson and D. Corkery. Opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 12.
The subscriptions for the year are: Men 25/-,' women 15/- (if paid before November 30 to be reduced by 3/-); first year players, men 12/6, women 7/6, to be paid within 14 days of opening day. ' ' Court fees were fixed at 2/6 per week.
It was decided that all members on active service overseas or those going into camp be retained as members, but if returning to Riverton to be charged half fees, to be adjusted according to their service.
WOMEN’S GOLF DRAW The following is the draw for the second qualifying round of the championship and captain’s trophy of the Riverton Ladies’ Golf Club to be played on Thursday:—Mrs G. D. Keeler v. Mrs D. F. MacDougall; Mrs S. H. Mitchell v. Mrs J. A. Lee; Miss H. E. MacDougall v. Mrs E. I. More; Mrs J. W. Martin v. Mrs W. R. Cockburn; Mrs L. Cloughley v. Mrs C. E. Beer; Mrs F. Thomson v. Miss I. Armstrong; Mrs A. B. Helm v. Mrs G. H. Webb; Mrs J. Stirling v. Mrs J. A. C. MacKenzie; Miss I. Carswell v. Mrs F. Conn; Mrs R. Dickson v. Mrs R.TC. McNeil; Miss J. Watson v. Miss R. Walker. The first qualifying round of the championships was played in conjunction with the September Ladies’ Golf Union medal match. The best cards handed in for the medal match were as follows:—Mrs W. R. Cockburn 100-20-80, Mrs J. W. Martin 121-36-85, Mrs D. F. MacDougall 121-36-85, Miss E. I. More 103-16-87, Miss H. E. MacDougall 122-34-88. MOTHERS’ UNION The members of the Riverton branch of the Mothers’ Union entertained to a social afternoon at the residence of Mrs H. J. Walden representatives from different local women’s organizations. Those present were: Mesdames H. Roberts, E. Gray, J. Harvey, H. E. Philip, S. Hofland, E. T. Eade, G. L. Dickson, H. R. Wright, R. H. Osborne, C. H. Gordon, W. Smyth, S. Helm, J. Blacke, S. Manderson, S. Ladbrook, L. M. Wohlers, W. S. Hunter, W. Whittingham, C. R. J. Inder, E. A. Trail, G. H. Webb, A. Castle, F. Thomson, S. A. Odell and H. J-. Walden. The gathering followed a short service that had been held at St. Mary’s Church, at which the Rev. J. N. Goodman officiated. The programme for the afternoon included songs by Mesdames Inder and Thomson, a dialogue by Mesdames Webb and Inder, and competitions. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE At the final meeting of the St. John Ambulance lectures on first aid which have been given in the Council Chambers by -Dr C. H. Gordon, the lecturer congratulated those who had passed the recent examination in home nursing. He called upon Nurse Gray, who had been in charge of this class to present the certificates to those who had passed and in presenting her with a bouquet
he expressed their appreciation of her help. Speaking of Mr J. W. Clarke’s interest in St. John Ambulance work, on behalf of those present Dr Gordon made a small presentation to him as a token of their regard for the keen interest he had taken in the work.
