MARIST CRICKET CLUB

SUCCESS OF PAST SEASON A decisio'n to hold the opening day on October 5 was made at the annual meeting of the Marist Cricket Club last night. The Rev. Father J. Murphy, who presided, said that the club had had a very successful season. However, it would be necessary this season to depend on the junior strength for the future maintenance of the club, because only two of the senior eleven remained. The members would do everything they could to encourage the junior members. On behalf of the club he expressed his appreciation of the support of persons who had made donations during the year, and thanks were due to members of the committee, especially the secretary and the treasurer • and to the Brothers.

The donation of a cup by the Marist Brothers for competition by the third grade players was announced by the chairman. He said that the presentation was a timely one since the club would be depending mainly on junior players for the coming season. Mr T. V. Mahoney, on behalf of the delegates to the Southland Cricket Association, outlined proposals which had been put forward by the association for consideration by the respective clubs. It was decided to favour two-day matches. A decision to endorse the suggestion that an age limit of 17 years be made in the third grade competition was also made. It was also decided that the club would be represented in the sports pageant on Saturday, arrangements being left in the hands of the executive.

The subscriptions, it was decided, should remain the same as for the past season.

In his concluding remarks, the chairman expressed the hope that those members who had enlisted for active service would soon return. The club would feel their departure and in the meantime he hoped that the club would enjoy many good games and keen competition. Three new members were elected for the coming season. The following officers were elected: Patron, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Howard; president, the Rev. Father J. Murphy; life members, Messrs M. J. Miller and H. W. Grace; vice-presidents, the Rev. Fathers McKay, McGettigan and Sexton, the Rev. Brother Augustine and Messrs W. Stapleton, J. P. Butler, G. T. Martin, R. Timpany, F. G. McGoldrick, F. G. O’Beirne, R. Taylor, F. St. J. Loughnan, T. Baird and M. O’Brien; delegates to the Southland Cricket Association, Messrs V. Lavelle, T. V. Mahoney and T. N. Forde; club captain, Mr V. Lavelle; hon. secretary, Mr T. N. Forde; hon. treasurer, Mr F. Beadle; hon. auditor, Mr A. T. Walsh.
