RUGBY PARK CLUB ANNUAL MEETING

A decision to hold the opening day on Saturday, September 21, was made at the annual meeting of the Rugby Park tennis club last night. The president, Mr A. W. Jones, remarked on the excellent financial position of the club and said he was pleased to note that the club had a full membership for the past year. Five new members were elected during the evening. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr A. W. Jones (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs D. Nesbit and S. Batchelor, and Mrs G. Butler; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Zwimpfer (re-elected); woman club captain, Miss F. Orr; vice-captain, Mr A. Harvey; auditor, Mr A. W. Jones (re-elected); delegates to the Southland Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs D. Checketts and R. Zwimpfer; committee, Messrs J. Hughes and D. Checketts and Miss F. Orr.

REPORT OF ST. MARY’S ’ CLUB

“The membership strength of the club was maintained during the season and a number of junior members joined the club,” says the annual report of the St. Mary’s Tennis Club. “As the future of any club depends to a large extent on these junior players, it is therefore in the club’s interests to encourage them. The effect of the war will doubtless be felt this season, as many players have already enlisted and will be leaving the club from time to time. To them is extended best wishes for a speedy and safe return. “The club entered three teams in the local competition,” continues the report, “and although not successful in attaining championship honours, they could always be counted upon to give their opponents good, hard games, the standard of play at times being very high. Congratulations are extended to D. P. Perrin, J. A. Marriott and Miss M. Mahoney on their inclusion in the Town representative teams during the season, and to Mr Perrin who was successful in reaching the semi-finals in the Galloway Cup competition. “Perusal of the balance-sheet will show the lack of response to the committee’s repeated appeals for subscriptions. The obligation of £l5O still remains on the cost of relaying the courts and the incoming committee will find itself faced with the problem of endeavouring to lessen this amount. “The club wishes to acknowledge in most appreciative terms the extensive financial assistance given the club by the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Howard in the laying down of the new courts. The action of the Waihopai, Invercargill and Rugby Park clubs in accommodating members while the courts were in the process of reformation, is also deeply appreciated. Thanks are due to the Southland Lawn Tennis Association for its co-operation and assistance, to the president, the Rev. Father Murphy for his untiring efforts with the new courts, and to Mr W. Milligan for personally supervising the work at the courts. “The club was unfortunate in losing Mr J. Lester who is with the 3rd Echelon. During the year, the resignation of Mr D. P. Perrin from the position of secretary, because of his joining the Air Force, was received with regret, and Miss M. Grace was elected to the position. Mr George Cameron and Mrs Prendergast were elected to fill the position vacated.”

KOVACS BEATS RIGGS (Received September 16, 8.20 p.m.) LOS ANGELES, September 15. _ In ’the Pacific south-west tennis championships Frank Kovacs beat R. L. Riggs, 6-1, 6-3.
