WOMEN’S HOCKEY
SOUTHLAND BEATS MATAURA
MATCH PLAYED IN THE RAIN The Southland women’s representative hockey team made a visit to Mataura on Saturday afternoon to fulfil an engagement with the Mataura Hockey Club. Unfortunately incessant rain fell during the match against the Mataura team, winner of the Eastern premiership. Mataura played with the dash and combination that have marked its competition games this season and it was unlucky in not getting the verdict. Southland, too, displayed quite good combination, but it had to concede the territorial advantage to its opponents for the greater part of the match. It was in the concluding stages, when Mataura had been hammering consistently at the Southland circle, that L. Purvis completed a breakaway dash by the Southland forwards, scoring cleanly after a melee in the goalmouth.
N. Wyllie and L. Purvis were among the best of the visiting team, and V. Brewster and the Adam sisters were prominent for Mataura. The teams were:—
SOUTHLAND.—A. Bateman, E. Blackie, E. Livingstone, M. Kelly, M. McLeod, L. Fraser, L. McDonald, H. Hansen, L. Purvis, A. Shaw, N. Wylie.
MATAURA.—J. Hayward, D. Ashby, M. Folster, E. Clearwater, H. Maley, A. Adam, E. Haywood, M. Adam, V. Brewster, I. Gillies and J. Adam. J. Adam opened up the game with a good run down the left flank and Mataura went strongly to the attack, but a 25 brought relief to Southland. For the next few minutes both teams manoeuvred for an opening. N. Wyllie made an attempt to break through, but the movement was held by the solid defence. Fortunes fluctuated after this. Southland again attacked, the effort being frustrated by an infringement from which V. Brewster and J. Adam broke away, going right through to the circle where the latter’s shot at goal went outside the posts. E. Haywood was seen in a similar movement and again the shot at goal failed. Mataura kept up the pressure. V. Brewster, E. Haywood and A. Adam figured in the offensive. A. Bateman was displaying excellent form and was responsible for breaking up the Mataura attacks. OFFSIDE GOAL A. Adam eventually netted, but her shot was ruled offside. Southland had a turn on attack which was shortlived. J. Adam turned the tables, dodging through the Southland rearguard and narrowly missing completing the movement. Immediately afterwards M. Adam and E. Hayward opened up an attack, the latter also narrowly missing the goal. Half-time sounded without any score. Southland took the initiative in the opening stages of the second half and Mataura conceded a penalty corner. The home side cleared, forcing Southland to take the defensive briefly. L. Purvis was prominent in an aggressive movement from which the home team was relieved by the Adam sisters. After Mataura had saved from another difficult situation V. Brewster paved the way for an attack and nearly succeeded in reaching the circle. She was held up by' the full-backs. Southland was showing more determination and twice came close to opening its account. Mataura rallied strongly to provide the opposition with an equally hectic few minutes. V. Brewster’s effort to net was narrowly averted. J. Adam also tried to open the scoring only to be baulked in the circle by A. Bateman. Southland had several lives thereafter, eventually managing to clear and placing Mataura on the defensive. Success came when L. Purvis tapped the ball into the net after a melee in the circle. Southland 1, Mataura 0 No further score was ■> registered during the remaining few minutes of play. _ ■ Messrs L. Holmes and J. Valentine refereed.
