CYCLING

CIRCUIT RACE WON BY A. JONES SMALL FIELD OF RIDERS A small field of 11 riders competed in the 60-mile circuit race held by the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club on Saturday. The course was round the Kennington-Roslyn Bush and Mill road circuit, four laps being made. Conditions were not good for cycling. A south-west wind was blowing and rain fell steadily throughout. The following were the starters: M. Toole, R. Duncan, A. and C. Waddick (16min.), A. Jones, D Ward, K. Baxter, J. Murdoch (lOmin.), L. Johnson, H. Rubber, H. Patton (6min.). At Roslyn Bush the first time round the positions remained practically the same as at the start. H. Rubber was dropped, but continued riding. The limit men were all together. The 10minute bunch had gained 11 minutes and file 6-minute men had gamed half a minute on the 10-minute riders. Hubber was still going 21 minutes further back. The road conditions were having their effect after the third round. A. Waddick and Duncan were at the front of the field. C. Waddick being 50 yards back. The 10-minute bunch now comprised A. Jones and Ward and they were 3 minutes behind the leaders. The. back-markers, H. Patton and L. Johnson, had lost 11 minutes. Baxter, Hubbed Toole, C. Waddick and Murdoch were all out of the race. At the start of the fourth round Waddick and Duncan were 30 seconds ahead of Jones and Ward and were caught at Myross Bush school. Waddick dropped out at this stage. The other three kept together until the finish, Jones beating Ward by half a wheel, with Duncan three lengths away. The placings were: A. Jones (lOmin), 2hr 27min 16sec 1 D. Ward (lOmin), 2hr 27min 16 l-ssec . R. Duncan (16min), 2hr 33mm 16 4-ssec 3

A. Waddick was fourth. H. Patton and L. Johnson were the only other competitors to finish. Jones secured fastest time from Ward.

TIME TRIAL TITLE RACE (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 15. R. Dutton, Poreke Club, retained his title in the /ifty-mile time trial. for the provincial road cycling championship.
