GOLF

Scores ranging from 77 to 120 were returned on Saturday in the first qualifying round of knock-out competitions that have been substituted for the championships of the Invercargill Golf Club this year. After a succession of fine Saturdays since the middle of June, light rain fell on Saturday afternoon, a moderate wind blew from the south-west and there was no placing of the ball for fairway shots. Conditions were thus in striking contrast to what they have been during the past three months and it was not surprising that many players returned scores much higher than what they have been doing lately. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WYNDHAM In the first round of the Wyndham Golf Club’s championships the most interesting match, was that between Rout (last year’s champion) and Crawford. Rout was in the lead practically all the way and at the fourteenth he was 2 up. His tee shot was well placed on the green, while Crawford was short. Crawford’s approach was too strong, and his third failed to find the cup. Rout had two putts for the win, but failed and the hole was halved. At Elbow, Rout pulled a long ball out of bounds and Crawford won the hole. The next two holes were halved and Crawford squared the match with a bogey at the last hole. At the nineteenth both had good drives, but neither player found the green with his second, gout was too strong with his third and

was short with his next and Crawford putted up for a win and the match. Milne nearly brought off a surprise in his match against Pankhurst. Pankhurst was 3 up at the twelfth, but Milne won this hole and Slippery was halved in bogey. Boiling Pot was won by Milne, who had a birdie 2. Milne also won Elbow and the match was square. The next two holes were halved and at the eighteenth Pankhurst hit a long ball, slightly pulled. Milne sliced his drive and he was left with a difficult second over the trees. He did not succeed and Pankhurst’s second was short. His third was handy, and Milne placed his fourth six feet from the pin. Pankhurst made no mistake with his putt and won the match 1 up. At the end of nine holes Barnett was 2 up on Heath and the Pit was halved in bogey. Heath, who was driving a long ball from the tee, hit a screamer at Clubhouse, but duffed his second and Barnett won with a birdie. McDonald’s was halved in bogey and Barnett won Slippery and was 4 up. At Boiling Pot, Heath failed to hole a sixfoot putt to keep the game alive and Barnett sank his putt to win the match. In the Plate, Henderson defeated Gibson after both players had shown some good form. Tangney had rather an easy win in his first match against Muir.
