CYCLING RACES

Success Of Limit Riders By RELIANCE The success enjoyed by limit and middle distance riders this season was continued in last week’s road race with a first for the limit man, A. Waddick, who finished 2£min ahead of the next competitor. Waddick rode the last 16 miles on his own. Second and third placings were filled by first-year riders, D. Ward and J. Murdoch respectively. Both have been riding consistently and are due for higher honours. H. Patton, who is striking his best form, registered his second fastest time last week. A proved long distance rider, Patton will be in his element with races now well up to the 50-mile mark.

H. Hubber has intentions of riding in the 100-mile Round the Gorges race at Christchurch on September 21. It is unfortunate that this event should clash with the 56-mile Southland championship, as Hubber holds the Davies Challenge Cup and was desirous of . defending it. However, the local officials had no option but to continue with their programme as arranged owing to the lateness of the season. C. Flowers, of Dunedin, will be down for the Southland championship and on his present form looks like winning it, although he will have tough opposition in L. Johnson, H. Mitchell and H. Patton to whom he will probably have to concede a start. The prize-list for the championship is as follows: First, Davies Challenge Cup and trophy valued at £3/3/-; second, Mr J. D. Campbell’s order (£2/2/—); third, Mr R. McKenzie’s order (£l/1/-); fastest time, Brooks Cup (challenge) and Mr J. Matheson’s trophy order (£l/1/-); junior fastest time, Mr C. Jenkinson’s armlet. In addition all riders completing the course in a certain time will be presented with a certificate. A report on the patriotic sports meeting was presented at a meeting of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club. The club’s part in the meeting will probably be confined to the parade and display section. The parade part needs no explaining, but the display section will probably take the form of a home trainer demonstration and a novelty race. Arrangements have not yet been completed. Two members of the club are at present on the sick list—C. Robinson is at home suffering from pleurisy and C. Campbell is an inmate of the Southland hospital with appendicitis. Club mates wish them a speedy recovery. The club continues to supply men for the forces, two more members, M. Harris and O. Henderson, having received notice to go into camp with the

4th Reinforcements. This brings the number of members on active service or in camp up to eight. Several more are awaiting notice.

A 60-mile race will be run today, the course being four times round the Roslyn Bush-Mill Road block. This course will provide quite a stiff test for the 56-mile championship the following week. As this race takes the place of the 66-mile Hedgehope-Mataura race, the Opperman plaque will be given with the first prize. The 66-mile race would not be practicable because of the petrol .restrictions. Coming events are: September 14, 60-mile Roslyn Bush-Mill Road circuit; September 21, Southland 56-mile championship; 100-mile Round the Gorges (Christchurch); September 28, patriotic sports at Rugby Park; October 5, Otago 50-mile championship; October 12, 18-mHe Invercargill-Bluff.
