A Diary of Sport BASKETBALL IN INVERCARGILL

Tourney To Close

Season

TWENTY-TWO ENTRIES RECEIVED i By ATTACK The basketball season in Invercargill will end tomorrow when a tournament and the presentation of trophies will take place. Twenty-two entries have been received and some keen and interesting contests should result. Three teams from outside Invercargill, Spar Bush, Balfour and Seaward Downs, will be competing. It is pleasing to see an entry from Balfour and it says much for the enthusiasm of the players that they are willing to travel such a long distance. The match between Collegiate and Rata for the News Shield will also take place tomorrow and this game should be one of the highlights of the afternoon. Rata, which is the holder of the trophy, has an unbeaten record this season and without a doubt Collegiate will have a hard task. However, on Saturday the two teams had a close contest and it is quite possible for Collegiate to succeed. The season in Invercargill this year has been very successful and a good standard of play has been maintained. The weather on most Saturdays has been ideal' for basketball and very few matches have had to be played in the Drill Hall. There is no doubt that outside play is much better. The wind at times makes shooting a little difficult, but with practice this handicap can be overcome to a big extent. The following are the season’s competition winners: First grade, Rata A; second grade, Pirates and Wallacetown; third grade, Woodlands; fourth grade, Makarewa, The Royds Shield for the club gaining the most points goes to Makarewa, with 84 points. Bluff was second with 65. Pirates and Wallacetown will each hold the second grade trophy for six months of the year.
