(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright)
(Received September 10, 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 9.
The chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee, Mr Sol Bloom, endorsed the strengthening of Australian-American ties. He added that at present there was no necessity for a defensive agreement similar to the Canadian-United States Agreement, but new developments might make it desirable in the future. The Navy has awarded contracts for 201 which will cost £965,250,000. It is estimated that they will require five years to complete. Simultaneously, it is revealed that final negotiations have been reached towards the acquisition of 2400 aeroplanes worth £27,000,000. Today’s naval contracts will increase the present authorized tonnage by 70 per cent., including seven battleships, eight aircraft carriers, 27 cruisers, 115 destroyers and 43 submarines. The House unanimously passed a £5,980,000 Dry Dock Bill, authorizing a £2,500,000 dock at New York, £1,875,000 for a dock in the Panama Canal area, and a sum for the improvement of the Boston dry dock.
