FORTS FIRE WARNING SHOTS
FISHERMAN VENTURES INTO FORBIDDEN WATERS
(United Press Association)
WELLINGTON, September 10. Warning shots were fired recently from the forts at the Wellington harbour mouth when a man, apparently fishing from a rowboat, ventured into forbidden waters in Breaker Bay. He took the hint and departed. Some weeks ago the Chaffers passage and the adjoining waters were Gazetted closed to shipping including small craft.
Recently, apparently in ignorance, a fisherman ventured into the affected area. To warn him that he was not allowed there a burst from a Lewis gun was fired in his vicinity, not, however, where there was any likelihood of hitting him. He thereupon shifted out of that area.
No other action has been taken, although it is understood that the police have the power to prosecute for a breach of the regulations.
